Generator Automation Explained: How an Automatic Transfer Switch Works
Generator automation uses an automatic transfer switch (ATS) to detect a power cut, start your generator and move your building onto generator power within seconds, with nobody pressing a button. When KPLC power returns, the system switches back and shuts the generator down. It keeps offices, clinics, shops and homes running through blackouts.
How it works, step by step
- The ATS monitors the mains. It constantly checks the KPLC supply.
- A power cut is detected. After a short delay to avoid false alarms, the ATS signals the generator to start.
- The generator warms up. The controller waits until voltage and frequency are stable.
- The load transfers. The ATS disconnects you from the grid and connects the generator, so power is back in seconds.
- KPLC returns. The ATS checks that mains power is stable, switches back and lets the generator cool down and stop.
Why not just switch manually?
- Speed. Automatic switching restores power in seconds, protecting servers, freezers and medical equipment.
- Safety. The ATS prevents the generator and the grid from feeding the building at the same time, which is dangerous.
- Convenience. It works at night, on weekends and when nobody is on site.
- Equipment protection. Controlled switching reduces damage from surges and repeated cuts.
Who needs generator automation?
| Business or home | Why it helps |
| Offices | No lost work or unsaved files during outages |
| Clinics and pharmacies | Keeps refrigeration and equipment running |
| Shops and supermarkets | Protects stock and keeps tills working |
| Homes with a generator | Lights and security stay on without effort |
One of our clients in the CBD says their office now keeps running when KPLC goes off. See our generator automation service.
Generator, solar or both?
A generator suits long outages and heavy loads. A hybrid solar system cuts fuel use and covers short outages silently. Many sites combine them: batteries handle the first hours, and the generator takes over for long cuts.
Quick answers
What does ATS stand for? Automatic transfer switch.
How fast does an ATS switch over? A few seconds, including generator start and warm-up time.
Can any generator be automated? Most modern generators can, but the controller must be compatible. We check during the survey.
Is it safe to connect a generator without an ATS? Not without proper isolation. Connecting a generator directly to building wiring can endanger people and equipment.
