Elesum solar pump controller with live display mounted beside a weatherproof DC combiner box on a timber and iron-sheet wall in Murang'a County

Powertap Solutions installed and commissioned the electronics for a solar water pumping system in Makuyu, Murang’a County: an Elesum solar pump controller and a weatherproof DC combiner and protection box, wired, labelled and mounted so the pump runs straight from the sun with no grid power or diesel.

What we installed

  • Elesum solar pump controller with a live display, mounted at working height and out of the weather.
  • Weatherproof DC combiner box with a DC breaker, fuse holders and a red surge protection device (SPD) to guard against lightning and voltage spikes.
  • Flexible conduit for every cable entry, all running into a single trunking channel.
  • Clear labelling on the box so any technician can identify and service it later.

Why a DC protection box matters for solar pumps

A solar pump controller is only as dependable as the DC side feeding it. The isolator lets a technician switch the panels off safely before any work. Fuses protect the wiring, and the surge protection device gives lightning and spikes a safe path away from the controller, which is the most expensive part of the pumping system. In rural areas of Kenya where lightning strikes are common, this small box is what keeps a pump running season after season.

Neat conduit runs and trunking keep the cabling protected and easy to trace.

Watch the pump running

With the controller and DC protection box commissioned, the pump was started on solar power and water came straight up the borehole outlet. This is the test we do on every solar pumping job before we hand over.

Result

The farm now has a controller that starts the pump when the sun is up and stops it safely when it is not, protected by a properly rated DC box. Completed April 2026 in Makuyu, Murang’a County.
